Lilacs

We have 2 lilac bushes in our yard that were here when we moved in.  They are planted on the north side of our house so they aren't in the best spot but they have done okay for now.

I feel fortunate to have great gardener friends. When I was told about a lilac farm going out of business I knew I had to check it out.

The farm is called Bates Hop House in Cherry Valley. Just a beautiful place! Here's the view we had while we looked around:

I had my nephew {& neice} with us and he asked "Where did the sky go?"  It was so foggy in the mountains.

Some of the lilacs were kept in the high tunnels and were blossoming already.

My sister and I made the short drive and it was SO worth the trip.  $15 for each lilac bush.  We packed the back of her car with as many as we could fit.  I didn't realize there were so many different varieties.

Today was gorgeous out so we planted them in our backyard.  I can't wait till they bloom and fill our backyard with their heavenly scent!  Did you know lilacs are edible too?  My friend Kristen gave me some lilac jam for my birthday.  Can't wait to try that out as well!

Here's what I got:
  • Nocturne {blue color}
  • Paul Thirion {purple-red buds, lavender florets}
  • Pocahontas {violet}
  • Yankee Doodle {darkest purple with small white center}
  • Silver King {silvery-lavender, striking beauty}

I love lilacs. My mom has some white lilacs that she got from her grandmother's place.
